I work in Fort McMurray but my home is in another province - can that be my permanent home address?
Employees may continue to maintain a permanent residence elsewhere in Canada; however Diversified employees are required to secure accommodations such as; shared accommodations, a room or apartment while working in Fort McMurray.
What class of Drivers Licence is required?
New drivers can secure work in Fort McMurray with an out-of- Province driver's license provided it's an A-B or CZ or a Class 1 or 2 "Q". Class G is equivalent to a Class 5 in AB; Class D is equivalent to a Class 3 in AB and does not qualify for one of our driving positions.
Do you offer camp positions?
No. As a general rule we do not have any driver positions that offer full camp accommodations. However, from time-to-time there are limited driving positions were full camp privileges are offered. When these opportunities become available they are "bid positions" and typically go to Senior Drivers.
One of the reasons why we do not offer Camp Accommodations is that we have long-term contracts with our Oil Sands Clients and we integrate our drivers into the community rather than having them living in camp, which in turn translates into improved driver well-being and tenure.
Do I need to secure my own accommodations?
All employees including new drivers are expected to secure accommodations in Fort McMurray. In addition to your earned income, Diversified also provides a monthly living allowance of $1,250 ($15,000 annual) to assist towards living expenses. During Training new Coach Trainees will receive temporary shared driver accommodations in a local hotel, which will be paid by the company. Upon completion of training and graduation new drivers are expected to have secured accommodations such as an apartment, room or shared accommodations.
Do you have fly-in fly-out?
No. We do not provide fly-in and fly-out to any of our drivers.
However, Drivers do qualify for a 25% discount from Red Arrow Motorcoach, (a sister company) that provides passenger service to Edmonton, Red Deer, Calgary and Lethbridge for those who are planning trips to their home cities. Typically, the majority of workers in the Oil Sands who receive fly-in and fly-out privileges are highly skilled trades workers and engineering specialists.
What is meant by Split-Shift?
Split-Shift means first thing in the morning from 05:00-08:00 and then again in late afternoon from 15:00-18:00 as an example of a split shift. The purpose of our work is to safely transport Oil Sands workers from Fort McMurray to specific plant and site locations and then home again in the evening.
What do you mean by a Trip Rate?
Drivers work either a 3-hour or 4-hour round trip and are paid a set trip rate. Please note that weather conditions and traffic can impact the length of a shift. When a Drivers trip time is exceeded due to traffic or accidents, Drivers are paid at an hourly rate.
When a Driver goes over the posted trip rate then an hourly rate of $27.85 is applied with an additional $5.40 directed to your pension for a combined hourly rate of $32.74.
How do the Shift patterns work?
Shifts available are as follows: 12 days on and 2 off, 4 days on and 3 off, 5 days on and 2 off, 21 days on and 7 off and 10 days on and 4 off. New drivers should expect to start on either 5 days on and 2 off or 12 days on and 2 off shift.
Can I get a 21 and 7 shift so I can get back home to see my family?
Upon completion of Training new drivers cannot choose a preferred shift. Rather, Operations assigns shifts and new drivers must accept the shift. New drivers must also be available to work any shift pattern they are assigned.
New drivers start at the bottom of the seniority list and work their way up to a position which will enable them to bid on the shift of their choice. This usually requires between 9 months and 12 months after a Driver has commenced employment.
How does the Seniority List work?
A new driver's seniority is set by the date of initial interview and new drivers start at the very bottom of the seniority list. A Union information package is sent out to each new driver after successful completion of a 90-day probationary period, which explains
in detail how the unionized structure works.
Where can I find accommodation in Fort McMurray?
Our Recruitment department provides new drivers with an "Accommodation Finding Guide" to assist new drivers in doing advance research with regards to securing accommodations in Fort McMurray. Typically, many new Coach Driver trainees often buddy up with one another and find accommodations together. Unless, you are in Fort McMurray it can be very difficult to secure rental accommodation. It is advisable that you become familiar with the range of accommodations available to ensure you understand the cost of accommodations and exactly what is provided. There is no best place to rent - our three (3) locations are within half an hour of each other.
What funds do I need if I'm planning to move to Fort McMurray?
You will need funds to cover your first 4-6 weeks in Fort McMurray. Do your research ahead of time so you are aware of the costs when arranging your accommodations. Diversified's payment structure for drivers is bi-monthly and is on a 2-week behind structure with pay being "direct deposited" into your bank account. Pay periods for 2013 are handed out at orientation for new drivers. The
amount of funds required will vary depending on the type of accommodation you want. New Drivers may need up to $5,000, which would include items such as; security deposits, first month's rent, food and gas etc.

successfully completed and passed their training.
What is Northern Living Allowance?
Recognizing that the cost of living (especially accommodation) is higher in Fort McMurray than in other parts of Canada, Fort McMurray employers have been prompted to offer monthly living allowances to assist employees with monthly living costs. Diversified offers a monthly living allowance of $1,250 a month ($15,000 per annum) in addition to salary. This amount is also subject to income tax and you can expect to receive approximately between $800-$850 on your paycheck on the last day of each month. To qualify for the monthly living allowance you must have worked a full calendar month on the Operations Board as a full-time driver.
What is a Per Diem during Training?
A "per diem" during Training means that a daily stipend of $30.00 is paid to each eligible driver upon successful completion of Training for each day spent in the Training Program, which is usually between 14-19 days. Drivers must submit this daily amount on
the same form as the gas reimbursement upon completion of the Training Program. Drivers do not need to submit receipts to claim the per diem. Per Diem and gas expenses can only be submitted on the day the driver graduates from training. No late submissions will be accepted.
Do I need special footwear or clothing?
You do not need steel toed boots. However, you do need good sturdy footwear that has a good solid anti-slip tread on the bottom, preferably black in colour. After a year's worth of full-time service drivers are eligible for uniform points and can purchase
added uniform items and qualify for a boot allowance. An initial uniform is provided on graduation day to all new drivers.
I have a Criminal Record - does this automatically disqualify me?
No, having a criminal record does not automatically disqualify you from employment with Diversified Transportation. The application process requires that you produce paperwork showing a full Canadian Pardon has been granted for the following: DUI, Armed Robbery, Assault and Failure to Stay at an Accident.
Other criminal records will require applicants show proof that they have started the pardon process and they would need to submit a copy of their fingerprints as well as the receipt with the RCMP showing they have sent off to Ottawa for a certified copy of their
criminal record. For more information and for step by step instructions on how to apply for a Pardon they should contact the Parole Board of Canada at 1-800-874-2652 www.recordsuspension.gc.ca.
I am a brand new Class 1 or 2 "Q" driver without one-year of driving experience. Can I still apply for a Motorcoach position?
Yes, you can apply but you would need to come to Fort McMurray (at your expense). An appointment is required and you must provide a resume and up-to-date driver's abstract. You are also required to complete a Literacy Test, Bus Operator Survey Assessment, an interview and road test. If you pass all four (4) steps successfully you will then be enrolled for the next available Training Class. If a driver does not pass the four pre-requisite steps he/she cannot be considered for employment. Applicants hired as a
Motorcoach Driver will also be provided with accommodations throughout training beginning the Sunday before the Monday start of the Training Class.
Can I transfer to Site Services if Motorcoach does not work for me?
Once a driver is in Motorcoach Training, Trainers conduct daily/weekly assessments to ensure the drivers are progressing as required. If a Driver is not a good fit for the Motorcoach Division they are sometimes recommended for Site Services Training. The
final decision on whether a driver is a good fit for another Division is based on the Training Department's assessment the driver's on-road performance, safety skills as well as their overall attitude.
What are the work hours and shift schedules for coach and site services drivers?
Work hours vary for each "Plant Site" where employee transportation services are provided. All drivers work split shift.
As an example the earliest morning shift may start at 03:45 a.m. and finish at 07:45 a.m. In the afternoon you may start at 03:45 p.m. and finish at 7:45 p.m. These times can vary depending on the Operations Division you are driving for and your assigned route.
The shift schedules. Currently, there are up to five shift schedules, however new motorcoach drivers can expect initial shift schedules that will likely begin with 4 days on and 3 days off or a 5 days on and 2 days off.
Site Services drivers work either: 5 days on 2 days off or 21 days on and 7 days off. These shift schedules are only estimates and are subject to change dependent upon the Operations Division and workload.
